Emergency Broadcasts

During an emergency or disaster, it is important to get instructions from officials about what you should do to respond whether it is evacuation, limiting water usage or sheltering in place. Because of the potential loss of electricity during an emergency, it is best to have a battery powered portable radio with extra batteries.

In the event of an emergency, you should tune in to your radio to one of the Emergency Alert Stations for official Federal Government announcements, instructions or additional information:

Baltimore:
WBAL (AM-1090)

WIYY (FM-97.9)

Washington, DC:
WTOP (FM-103.5)

WMAL (AM-630)

If television service is available, school announcements will also be made on the following television stations:

Baltimore: Cable Channel in Howard County:
WBAL (Channel 11)  11
WJZ (Channel 13)  13
WMAR (Channel 2)  12

Washington, DC: Cable Channel in Howard County:
WRC (Channel 4)  4
WJLA (Channel 7)  7
WTTG (Channel 5)  75
WUSA (Channel 9)  9

You may also want to check the Howard County Government Cable Channel 70 or Howard County Public School System's Cable Channel 72. The Emergency Email Network http://www.emergencyemailnetwork.com may also be helpful in case of emergency. It is a public private partnership between government, public services and private underwriting sponsors. Users can obtain free updates about disasters and other news via email or cell phone.
